Briefing for TCR Jengka Springs Internship / Externship Program.
EXTERNSHIP APPLICATION OVERVIEW
To be eligible for the Externship at Tropical Camel
Ranchers Holdings Sdn Bhd, you must be a veterinary or
agricultural student who has completed the theoretical
part of your training. You must have started or be ready
to start your field or clinical rotations.
English is the language spoken by the doctors and staff.
It is essential that you be able to speak, understand, and
write in the English language.
Graduate veterinarians are not eligible. this program is
designed for students who seriously intend to enter
practice.
Dedication to either the bovine, equine, canine and or
poultry field; Botany, horticulture and hydroponic feed
production should be demonstrated through experience
listed in curriculum vitae and two letters of reference
from practicing veterinarians or agricultural faculty.
Academic transcripts and the fully completed application
form are also required. The application should be
forwarded by mail as a complete package (reference
letters should be included in sealed envelopes).
Applicants are encouraged to apply at least six months in
advance and should indicate the two or more months
when they are available to commence.
The veterinary internship / assistants program is for a minimum period of 6 months X 3 modules, starting at the beginning of the month. Six students are selected for each program.
As TCR Jengka Springs strive for cultural diversity ,
applications are received from veterinary and agricultural students worldwide.
In each program, no more than eight students are
selected from any one state, university or country each
year.
Acceptance is not influenced by the gender of the
applicant. These factors along with the quality of
applicants make the program dynamic and competitive.
SPONSORSHIP:
Each accepted Candidate (Extern) student receives a
Monthly allowance of RM 800.00 with room and board at
the TCR Jengka Springs Facility (Cattle Country at the
Heart of Malaya), Pahang, Malaysia.
THE COMPANY: HOST
Tropical Camel Ranchers Holdings Sdn. Bhd. Was
incorporated as a private limited liability company (Sdn.
Bhd.) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in October 2005. Its
primary mission is to breed and grow tropical beef and
dairy cattle for the Malaysian and South East Asian
market.
In doing so TCR established an initial foundation herd of
KK (Kedah-Kelantan) ‘Indigenous Malay Zebu’ type
heifers and a supporting stud of quality KK bulls.
Tropical Camel Rancher’s mission is to profitably breed
and grow, Tropical Cattle & Specialized Livestock while
providing an alternative pure and lawful method
(At’Tayyibat, Halal) of production, processing and
distribution.
In supporting our program we employ a core team of
highly qualified individuals, professionals who have
been directly involved in researching the principal
aspects incorporated in the successful generation and
development of the business: principally stewardship,
ranch management, livestock husbandry; cattle, dairy
and beef carcass production, abattoir and meatpacking
operations,
Additionally:
• Breeding Asiatic ponies and stock horses ; eventually
offering livery and training services.
• Operating a breeding and training kennel ‘TCR
Sidekick Kennels’ for Australian Cattle dogs;
eventually offering boarding services.
• Developing programs for free-ranging fowl i.e.
chickens, turkey, guinea fowl and other ornamental
fowl.
TCR is currently breeding the KK or Indigenous Malay
Zebu and the LID (Local Indian Dairy) on our leased 100
acre facility at Jengka Springs Maran, Pahang Darul
Makmur. We are now about to commence a sexed semen
program on the Improved KK-Boran (indigenous African
Zebu) a TCR initiated breeding program aimed at
producing a beef animal that will grow to 400kg in 400
days under a Hydroponic fodder sprouted grain and dry
matter feeding regime.
TCR also provides for the management and maintenance
of Malaysia’s first and only purpose built Livestock
Auction Center.
TCR also operate Malaysia’s only Mobile Auction Barn
officially launched by the Pahang State Execo for
Agriculture; YB Dato’ Tan Mohd Aminudin Ishak on
Saturday 29t h of November 2008 at the “Karnival Haiwan
Pahang” held at the Pahang Agriculture Showground
“Taman Pertanian Jubli Perak Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah”
Indra Makota, Kuantan Pahang.
TCR Is also actively involved in developing Hydroponic
Fodder production techniques and in developing herbal
feed additives such as Moringa Oliefera and other fodder
legume. Under our hydroponic program TCR will also be
developing systems for growing market garden crops
fruit and veg.
DUTIES AND EXPECTATIONS
This Internship / Externship program involves long
hours and commitment, but for the motivated student, it
will be a great educational experience in a state‐of‐the art agriculture and a bovine, equine, canine and poultry
practice.
There will also be the opportunity to participate in our
ongoing research involving the impact of and on
indigenous fauna and domestic livestock.
All Candidates will be expected to take part in joint
mustering, drafting, surveying, branding, tagging and
vaccination operations within our State with the local
community and possible with and under the supervision
of the Veterinary Services Department.
Therefore, the Intern and Extern Candidates “shadows”
and assists the in-house Doctors for many of the routine
tasks and patient care on the farm and group properties
and where good neighborly assistance is required.
Tropical Camel Ranchers Holdings Sdn Bhd regards this
Internship / Externship program as an opportunity for
selected candidates to be with clinicians that have hands
on training and experience in specific fields.
The role of the Veterinary Assistant Candidates will be to
observe the outpatient and inpatient diagnostics,
surgery, and treatment procedures, assisting where
appropriate.
Additionally, their duties will include monitoring and
treatments of surgical and non‐surgical hospitalized
patients.
With subsequent group discussions of clinical findings
during diagnostic work and treatment strategies for case
management are all integral components of the Extern
program.
We strive for high quality patient diagnostics and care
on a relaxed, team‐oriented farm environment.
While we encourage a good sense of humor at work on
the farm, we are very serious about the professional
service that we attain to.
Program supervisors are easy to approach and will
always do their best to cover any questions that one may
have. Further in depth discussions are best timed for
when we are not busy, in rounds, or in the client’s or
farmers absence.
FARM DUTIES
The day after one arrives will be a rest day providing an
opportunity to sleep (get over jet-lag) and settle in.
After this, expect to be available 24 hours every day of
your stay.
Although the Externship program does not include time
for sightseeing and private visiting in Malaysia, we will
do our best to make sure the Candidates as a group will
have ample opportunities to visit our Capital; Kuala
Lumpur and State Capital; Kuantan and sample local
culture and lifestyles and beaches in Malaysia.
We will have opportunities for selected candidates to
experience ‘Malaysian Village Life’ for a limited number
of days under a home-stay extension program.
A Candidates duties will depend in part on the time of
the year they commence their Internship or Externship.
All Candidates participate in (rotational) on-farm night
duties and will help cover local emergencies.
We will make every effort to vary the routine so that
Candidates may spend some time with doctors and farm
management in hands on field practice.
Candidates; both Interns and Externs specific duties and
expectations are outlined and explained on their first
day during an orientation briefing
SOME GENERAL AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
WORK STATIONS: There will be five distinct
workstations within the farm area. Although the farm
has an excellent team of Stockmen and General Workers,
each workstation should be checked and kept clean bio-secured) and tidy several times daily .
SURGERY DUTIES: After each surgery, while the patient
is in recovery, the Candidates should help with cleaning
and packing instruments.
HEMATOLOGY LABORATORY: Candidates are oriented
to laboratory protocols and procedures by the Program
Supervisor. They are encouraged offer their assistance
or may be asked to perform certain blood analysis.
PERFORMANCE EVALUATION:
Performance evaluation is ongoing and a two way
program.
• We expect our Intern and Extern candidates to file
weekly performance evaluation on our program.
• Candidates will also have their overall performance
evaluated and presented weekly.
At the end of each respective program; candidates are
given a letter verifying their participation in the TCR
program, with a full description of their role in our
program and their on farm, hands on, performance.
This overall assessment of their performance will also be
sent to their respective faculty.
All Candidates; Interns or Externs, who fail to maintain
the standards outlined in this guide or who abuse our
hospitality, will have their Internship or Externship
terminated and will receive an assessment reflecting our
dissatisfaction.
GENERAL INFORMATION
DRESS:
As with all the staff at the farm, Candidates are expected
to maintain a neat, clean, and professional appearance.
• Uniform: Long sleeved shirt, blue jeans, ankle boots,
stock-mans hat, (four sets; complete change to be
provided by the candidate)
◦ working and surgical gloves, wellington boots,
overalls provided by the farm.
• Off Duty: Jeans and sneakers are fine provided they
are not ripped, frayed, or worn out. Ironed Polo
shirts without slogans and or religious symbols are
permissible.
Women Candidates should be aware of the conservative
culture in this Islamic country. Tank tops, spaghetti tops,
shirts with low necklines, tight clothing and exposed
midriffs are not appropriate .
In Wet Tropical Malaysia the sun is quite strong every
day of the year so sunglasses and sunscreen are highly
recommended.
Nights and early mornings can be cooling and it will rain
during the monsoon period December until March. If you
are visiting during this period, plan to pack a jacket and
sweatshirts.
CUSTOMS / CULTURE
Malaysia is a very modern and forward looking Islamic
Country; a subtle blend of diverse cultures based on a
multiplicity of ethnic and religious groups all working
together for the common good.(Fraternizing / flirting with locals of either sex from the Jengka triangle is totally unacceptable due to the conservative nature
and sensitivities of the local folk. )
ACCOMMODATION
The TCR Jengka Springs has comfortable accommodation
on the farm for both Interns and Externs. Candidates are
expected to maintain and keep the accommodation clean
and to leave the place in the same condition as when
they arrived. Any problems with the houses should be
reported immediately.
Smoking is not permitted in the house or any other part
of the farm. All smoking must be done on the area
provided on each veranda or in smoking area of the
guest “Cowgirl Café” café.
Overnight visitors (of either sex) are not permitted
in the house.
TELEPHONES
Each member of staff has a mobile phone and can be
contacted easily. If you need to call home after you
arrive, it can be arranged with the farm receptionists or
the resident supervisor.
LAUNDRY
The farm has a laundry facility. Candidates can use this
service for their personal clothes.
• A word of warning however, our laundry is used to
washing farm linens. If you have delicate clothes or
items that are especially valuable to you or you may
want to have them cleaned in which case they can be
sent to a Laundry at the candidate’s expense.
MEALS
The farm has a cook and an assistant. Meals are provided
during your stay. We serve “Halal” Malay, Indian,
Chinese and Western cuisine.
If the local fare is too spicy, the cook will prepare your
meals differently. The houses are supplied with basics
such as potable water, tea, coffee, sugar, milk, cereal,
etc.
• If you wish to prepare food in the house, you may
purchase goods at a nearby supermarket at your
own expense.
MATRON
The company will endeavor to provide a senior Matron
as housekeeper and counselor..
VISA
Tropical Camel Ranchers Holdings Sdn Bhd will arrange
for a minimum initial 180‐day 'study-visit' visa for each
External Candidate
These are issued specifically for an Externship Candidate
and, once issued, cannot be altered. Do not expect to
extend your stay in Malaysia or change your travel
itinerary outside the rules pertaining to this program.
• Candidates who abuse this immigration rule will
have committed a serious offense and will have their
visa terminated with immediate effect.
• The Program Supervisors will subsequently lodge a
formal report with local police and immigration
department and will report the matter to the
candidates’ respective faculty.
• No certificate of participation in our program will be
awarded.
TRANSPORTATION
A driver will meet all candidates at the airport on arrival
and drop you off when you depart. The drivers’ activities
are directed by TCR Administrator.
• The driver is very busy and his duties do not include
driving Intern or Externs.
◦ Candidate’s are not allowed to drive farm vehicles
under any circumstances.
COURTESY
Candidates are considered guests and are expected to
treat all staff and workers at TCR Jengka Springs
courteously and with due respect.
• It takes a large staff of people in different roles to
run a farm. Candidates should not only be helpful
but also maintain a good attitude and high level of
professionalism.
MEDICAL
Tropical Camel Ranchers Holdings Sdn Bhd does not
accept any responsibility for injury or accident, so all
Interns / Externs should be covered by their own
medical insurance (copy of which to be presented with
application and other supporting documentation).
VISITORS
TCR Jengka Springs is a Bio Secured Facility: Family or
friends of the Candidates are not allowed on the farm
without prior approval from the TCR Jengka Springs
Management or the Program Supervisor.
